Anne Bracker tells us about what 3 skills she thinks are most important for graphic designers to be truly successful in the graphic design industry.

1. The first skill needed to become a successful graphic designer is good typography skills. This is something that designers don’t focus on heavily when they are coming out of graphic designer school. Designers often worry about their images, illustration, or color palette before ever refining the typography within their designs. If you as a graphic designer take the time to slow down and focus on your typography you will be worlds ahead of other designers. Typography in your graphic design projects can set you apart in a crowd of designers.

2. The second skill needed to be a great graphic designer is attention to detail. So many times we, as graphic designers, just want to get a project launched and we overlook the small yet important details. The details, similar to typography, are what will set you apart in a crowd of graphic designers.

Attention to detail has started to become a rare skill among designers because we all just want to get a project done and we don’t want to double check our work. In the everyday moments, it may not seem like a big deal. But as you continue to work as a graphic designer and you put out more and more work what will you be known as… the graphic designer that produces accurate work, or work full of errors and misspellings?

3. The third skill, or better said character trait for this one, is grit. If you want to become a great graphic designer you need grit! You need to be able to stick it out when times are tough. When you are not getting the results you are looking for within a design project, job interview, or another skill set you are trying to learn. As a graphic designer, you need to be able to continue to push yourself to not give in and not give up on the challenge set before you.

If you don’t the job after sending out 30 resumes then you need to send out 60 resumes. If you don’t get the job after sending out 60 resumes than you need to send out 120 resumes. You need to keep striving for more. Everyday pushing yourself to grow and become a better graphic designer.

Art and design are so subjective, but people can tell if they like your design abilities or not, so your goal is to show them that you are the person for the project. Keep persevering and pushing yourself to grow as a graphic designer.
